A Winter Afternoon

“The wait is over!” they joyfully say.
The first month of the year, the seventh day.
The long looked for event has now come nigh,
The cooler weather, the ominous sky
Bodes a wintry mix, though slight it would seem.
The clouds block even the smallest sun beam.
The cool, gentle breeze was swirling around
While falling to the earth was something white.
‘Twas a tranquil scene with almost no sound
With the small snowflakes—a wonderful sight.

True, once on the ground, the flakes were all gone,
They were hard to see even in the sky.
But in that moment, those who were alone
Saw the tiny snowflakes and looked on high.
Silent they stood, a joyful time serene
‘Twas not on the ground, a carpet pristine,
But they could see it swirling in the breeze
Here and now there among the leafless trees.
E’en though it was not much, this did they know-
They could be thankful and dream of more snow.

What is it, then, that inspires this happiness,
This joyful, giddy feeling that the first snow brings?
A smiling, happy laughter rises in us
It is the untold joy of small and perfect things.

The tiny graces each day holds in store
Are kisses given of a Father’s love.
The unexpected ones to show what we ignore
To wake us, as today, when from the heavens’ door
The snow came softly down, sent to us from above.

Thank you for the inspiration.
